With fans rapidly losing interest in the gloved game, the opportunity is ripe now for investment and growth in BKB.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BARE-KNUCKLE BOXING
Many people these days associate BKB with travellers fighting on wasteland but the sport has origins dating back to 4000BC. Hieroglyphics have been found in ancient Egypt depicting men fighting toe to toe with wraps around their knuckles. The Greeks also had various forms of boxing throughout the history of the Olympic Games but in England, there was a huge resurgency of BKB throughout the 17th Century.
Prize-fighters would tour the country taking on all-comers. There were basic rules such as no biting or gouging but in general they were brutal free-for-alls until the Marquis of Queensbury established his rules in 1887.
Battle hardened men like Tom Hickman, Jem Mace, Tom Cribb, James J Corbett, John L Sullivan and James Figg (who later became recognised as the first English heavyweight champion) laid solid foundations for the likes of today’s fighters and they became national heroes. Mace even travelled to the USA to fight and would later become an excellent promoter and showman. His fight events often attracted more than 2000 spectators.
At WSBKB we aim to recapture the spirit of the olden days but with the added benefit of modern technology enabling the fights to be witnessed globally by millions.
RULES AND REGULATIONS
the LEGALITIES OF BARE-KNUCKLE BOXING
First and foremost the safety of the fighters in paramount and at each event there will be a team of qualified medics as well as a doctor and an ambulance on site. Each fighter must undergo a drugs test and pre-fight medical and is also fully checked out after the fight. Even the guy putting on the wraps is fully trained!
Despite what a lot of people think, BKB is legal providing you have permission off the local authority and relevant police force and the appropriate safety measures in place. As the ONLY sanctioned body for bare-knuckle boxing in the UK, we take these responsibilities very seriously indeed. We see evidence of so many mis-matched fights and potentially dangerous events taking place that we intend to become the authorised ‘go to’ guys for advice and assistance in all promoters following our lead.
It has been scientifically proven that getting punched off a glove does more concussive damage to the brain than getting hit off a bare or wrapped fist. Our motto is ‘you can fix broken bones but you can’t mend broken Brains’. Ultimately as we have seen tragically over the years in gloved boxing, it is this damage to the brain’s blood supply that causes such deadly and life-changing injuries. It is true that BKB offers a much more blood thirsty spectacle but these injuries are often superficial and at most require a few stitches , which then become badges of honour along with the busted nose and swollen hands!
Fighters at all WSBKB events are matched according to weight and skill levels. They must attend several training days at the UK’s only bare-knuckle academy in Warrington BEFORE we will even consider letting them fight. They will be vetted by some of the sport’s most experienced men and have the chance to meet and spar with some of the best fighters in the land.
The bygone days of 6 hour battles between the likes of Smith and Kelly are consigned to the history books; our non-title fights consist of 3 x 2 minute rounds and our title fights are 5 x 2 minute rounds. There is a ten second count as with gloved boxing should a fighter hit the deck and the second a fighter feels like he has given his best and cannot continue, the fight is stopped immediately. Our fighters are NEVER forced into continuing if they do not wish to do. It takes huge guts to step through the ropes and we respect any man that does.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES FOR BARE-KNUCKLE BOXING
If you would like to join our growing team of fighters you will first need to attend our regular training days, held at the UK’s only BKB academy in Warrington. Keep an eye out on the facebook page UBKB as well as our ‘Future Events’ page on this site for details of upcoming training days.
You will meet Shaun Smith, the boss and the rest of the team. You will undergo a frantic fitness and sparring session where your skills will be assessed and your general fitness considered. You will also be training with some of the most experienced bare-knuckle fighters in the country so it is a huge opportunity.
Please be aware that we do NOT want to receive video submissions of street fights of lads with ‘reputations’.
in order for us to take you seriously we need to see you at the gym.
In order for us to invest our time and effort into your development, the least you can do is show some commitment on your side and come down to the training days.
We will give you all the help and encouragement you need once we know you are serious. Nobody will be allowed to just turn up and fight no matter what their reputation may be.
